Coat of arms of the Finnish branch

Dehn , whose name is also given with Daehn , is the family name of a Finnish-Russian noble family whose origin was in Braunschweig . In the Russian Empire they were particularly active in civil and military service. There are no genealogical connections to the other Baltic families "von Dehn".

history

The place of origin Braunschweig is traced back to Samuel von Dehn (1710–1782), who came to Russia with him from Braunschweig as secretary of Anton Ulrich Prince von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1714–1774) . He settled in Saint Petersburg . Samuel's son Johann Samuel (1758-1814) settled in Sippola (Finland). His three sons Johann Jakob, Alexander Gustav and Karl Leopold were introduced on June 26, 1836 in the Finnish knight house under number 199. In their coat of arms, like the Revaler von Dehn, they had a rafter , a star above the rafter and an executioner on the helmet , which are missing in the Baltic coat of arms. Despite this evidence , a relationship with the other Baltic noble families of Dehn cannot be proven. The Finnish Dehn claimed, however, that a Dehn from Reval settled in Finland when he asked for financial support and was denied it, he broke away from the Baltic branch and has since used the name «Daehn».
