Dennis Showalter

Dennis Edwin Showalter (born February 12, 1942 in Delona , Minnesota , †  December 30, 2019 in Colorado Springs ) was an American military historian .

Life

He received his bachelor's degree from Saint John's University (AB) in Minnesota in 1963 . At the University of Minnesota (AM) followed in 1965 the master and 1969 with Otto plant the Ph.D. In 1969 he became Assistant Professor to Professor at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1997/98 he was Distinguished Visiting Professor and 2001/02 Mc Dermott Chair at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. In 2005 he held the Harmon Memorial Lectures in Military History at the United States Air Force Academy and in 2007 the Perspectives in Military History Lecture Series at the United States Army War College .

From 1997 to 2001 he was President of the Society for Military History . He was the founding editor of War in History , editor of the Oxford Bibliographies in Military History, and series editor of Modern War Studies ( University of Kansas Press ) and Brassey's Military Profiles . He also advised the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Military History Quarterly magazine .

His research focus was German military history .
