The department of San Carlos is located in the south of the province of Salta in north-western Argentina and is one of 23 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered by the departments of Cachi and Chicoana to the north, by the department of La Viña to the east, by the department of Cafayate and the province of Catamarca to the south and by the department of Molinos to the west .
The capital of the department is San Carlos of the same name .
