action

Bookseller Paul has been living in a retirement home for some time, where he does not feel comfortable. His daughter Hélène and granddaughter Mathilde visit him for his birthday. Paul was abandoned by his wife Madeleine when Hélène was ten years old. Hélène told Mathilde that her grandma is dead. Mathilde, in turn, lives with her mother, who has separated from her husband. Mathilde's father is Italian and works in the USA, so Mathilde only has contact with him by telephone. After an argument, partly because of her bad school grades, Mathilde runs away from home and goes to see her grandfather at night. She tells him that she found letters from Madeleine, including one addressed to her. Madeleine writes in it that she would like to get to know her granddaughter. Mathilde convinces Paul to go to Biarritz with her and visit Madeleine. During Paul's absence, the home residents organize to hide his escape for as long as possible.

Paul and Mathilde travel to Biarritz by TGV . Here Paul first visits the bookstore Der Hals der Giraffe , which belonged to him then and which is still called today as it was before. The former house of Madeleine no longer stands and the workshop of Paul's best friend Maxime, for whom Madeleine once left him, is also abandoned. They both find out that Maxime lives in a retirement home. Maxime tells both that he was only with Madeleine for four years, who again tried in vain to find Paul after their separation. He and his daughter had purposely gone into hiding out of hurt pride and moved to different countries. Only in the old people's home does Paul realize that the letter Madeleine had written to Mathilde is already nine years old. He decides to return home. Because they miss the train, they call Hélène, who is already on her way to Biarritz and takes them with her. The three spend the night in a hotel. An attempt by father and daughter to speak out about the relationship between Paul and Madeleine after all these years fails. Paul travels back to Paris shortly afterwards. He made up his mind not to go back to the nursing home. Instead, he moves back into his Paris apartment, which he had never given up. Mathilde and Hélène, in turn, travel on to Spain. In one of her last letters, Madeleine had given Hélène her new address in a small Spanish village. On site, Hélène and Mathilde meet Madeleine, but she does not recognize her. Madeleine has dementia . Hélène and Mathilde offer to accompany the old woman home and take her hand as they walk with her down the village street.
