The candidate (original title candidate ) is a Danish thriller from 2008 directed by Kasper Barfoed . It is the first Danish film to be produced in the 2-perf format . The film is about the criminal defense attorney Jonas Bechmann from Copenhagen , who is convinced that his father, the lawyer Peter Bechmann, was murdered by his seedy client after he had previously lost his trial. When investigating, he suddenly comes under suspicion of murder himself.

After a spectacular case, the lawyer Peter Bechmann had a fatal accident. His son, the defense attorney Jonas Bechmann, wants to clear up the mysterious circumstances surrounding his father's alleged traffic accident, as he cannot come to terms with his death. Previously, his father had lost a high-profile case from his questionable client. Over the attempt to clear up the unexplained circumstances and background, Jonas falls out with his fiancée Camilla.

After Jonas Beckmann had flirted with the good-looking Louise, the morning after he found her apparently dead in the bathroom of his hotel room. Since Jonas had drunk over his thirst during a drink that night , he can no longer remember anything. As a result, he is blackmailed for five million kronor by unknown people : on a video that is sent to him, it appears that Jonas murdered the young woman.

Jonas then goes into hiding in order to better get to the bottom of the events of that night. His first private investigations, however, lead to various dead ends. In the end, Jonas discovers a few traces that point to a conspiracy in which some people are apparently entangled who previously appeared to be trustworthy to him.

Awards

Jeppe Kaas was awarded the Robert in the category Best Score in the film The Candidate in 2009. Thomas Dyg was also nominated for the Robert in the category Best Production Design in this film , but won no prize.
