The comet (also: the comet - Death comes from space ., En orig .: Night of the Comet ) is a horror - comedy by Thom Eberhardt from the year 1984 . The film did not come into German cinemas and was released on video in 1986.

action

When a comet passes the earth, almost all of humanity is wiped out by an unknown effect. The victims, many of whom have been outdoors to see the announced natural spectacle, crumble into red dust. The few survivors in Los Angeles include the energetic 18-year-old Regina, her 16-year-old naive sister Samantha and the young trucker Hector - they all happened to be in a Faraday cage . People who were only weakly exposed to radiation turn into bloodthirsty mutants.

After the initial shock, the girls try to make the best of the situation and ransack a department store while Hector sets off for nearby San Fernando to find his family. However, he cannot find anyone and must assume that she is dead. Meanwhile, Reggie and Sam clash with an organized gang of mutants. At first they can defend themselves with cunning and armed force, but eventually they are captured. The mutants want to act out their sadistic tendencies on them.

However, the group of mutants is soon eliminated by a group of scientists. They had taken shelter from the comet in an underground bunker in the Nevada desert . They act as rescuers and hide the fact that a breakdown in the bunker technology has affected them by the effects of the comet and that they are slowly mutating. They draw blood from healthy survivors in the hope of a cure; the "blood donors" are murdered for this purpose ( brain death ). Unsuitable "copies" are murdered on the spot - Samantha escapes this fate only by the help of a scientist with remorse that kills about their liberation a colleague and then suicide commits.

Regina is brought into the underground facility, but is able to free herself and discovers the dark plans of the mutant scientists. With the help of Samantha and Hector, who followed her, she is able to free herself and two small children who are also intended for “blood donation” and kill the super mutants.

In the deserted San Francisco, Regina, Hector and the two children form a clichéd nuclear family - when another healthy survivor turns up as a partner for Samantha, the happy ending is complete.

Quote

“The kids saw (the story) as a big adventure, the parents noticed the ironic aspect. [...] An example of this is Kelli's monologue about her hope of being invited on a date by a certain boy, but unfortunately he was turned to dust by the comet [...] "
