occupation

The key witness is a psychological thriller by director Johannes Grieser from 2007. In the main role , Tobias Moretti embodies a former key witness who, due to his testimony to a murder case, has been given a new identity for his protection and has since been known as Achim Weber.

action

Achim Weber is actually not only a successful architect, but also a happy family man. He meets the attractive Denise on a business trip, but continues to pay no special attention to the lady. Even when Denise knocks on his hotel room door in the evening to talk to him about their failed marriage, he doesn't get any strange thoughts.

The whole thing only becomes strange for him when he wakes up in his hotel bed the next morning, a bit foggy, realizes that he must have lost his wedding ring, and on top of that, room service delivers breakfast for two to the door, he stirs up the suspicion of misbehaving in some way during the night. He suspects that his own view of the world is threatening to fall apart.

A short time later he receives incriminating photos showing him with Denise and a very young girl. There is only one option left for him: Denise is behind the fact that he woke up dazed in bed, and the photos must also be from her. The question arises what Denise might want to blackmail him from. Achim is already in distress because his wife has already learned that he is no longer wearing his wedding ring.

In the further course of the film, Denise appears again and again in Achim's immediate vicinity; as a result, he feels more and more insecure. He feels like he's being followed, but he can't talk to anyone about his experiences. It is becoming increasingly clear to his wife Christina that something is wrong with Achim; His behavior, which he has recently shown, makes her fear that he has had an affair with a strange woman.

Christina got the idea that Achim may never have been who he actually pretended to be. The thought matures in her that his strange behavior could have something to do with the fact that he basically never really wanted to tell about his own past. Now things are getting tight for Achim because he notices that his past is catching up with him. A past in which he testified as a key witness in a murder case in order to bring the killer down and he was then given a new identity by the authorities as part of a leniency program. What Achim does not suspect is the fact that the murderer Frank Roloff, who was sentenced to a long prison term because of his testimony, is already at large. Somehow he managed to trace back to Achim, his traitor.

Achim almost feels relieved when he is asked to hand over a considerable sum of money. He hopes that by paying the required amount, he can finally finish with his past. The film takes a dramatic turn when Denise, to whom he is about to hand the money, is found dead. Furthermore, more and more photos are appearing that show Achim in ambiguous situations.

Frank Roloff's plan is to destroy Achim's life's work step by step in order to get a final vengeance on the man who brought him to prison on the basis of his testimony. Much too late, Achim realizes that Roloff was dead on his feet.
