The man with the tree frog is a German silent detective film from 1928 by Gerhard Lamprecht with Heinrich George in the title role.

action

An even more obscure, nameless guest stays in an obscure hotel. He is a well-built but well-dressed man with an umbrella who carries a tree frog in a glass. That man prefers to hang around the hallways and stairs of the inn, supposedly to find flies for food for his animal. Obviously, there is more to him than that: the man also listens to doors and their keyholes.

At the same time: The young Yvette Bruneaux, the only daughter of an art dealer, intends to celebrate the engagement to her noble fiancé Henri Vallencours when her long lost mother turns up. Lou Bruneaux had once left husband and daughter to run away with a useless day thief and adventurer. She urgently needs money now and is only interested in her daughter's lucky day to the extent that she steals the bridal jewelry from Yvette. A series of events lead them to the hotel where the man with the tree frog stayed.

Her body is found here a little later; the lonely husband, Monsieur Bruneaux, is suspected of murder. But he did just as little as the tree frog keeper, who is rather a shrewd criminalist. Soon he found the real murderer: it was the hotel servant and the maid, his accomplice. The snoop had taken up residence in the hotel because he had been on the trail of this criminal couple for some time. Yvette and her lover Henri can now enter into the bond of life undisturbed.

Reviews

The Österreichische Film-Zeitung wrote: "The strong tension that emanates from the extremely effective detective film makes it extremely interesting and attractive, one follows breathlessly the course of the extremely skillful and opaque action, the solution of which surprises the viewer."

Paimann's film lists summed up: "A subject, free of kitsch, after a promising exposition exciting to the end, carefully staged, the actors offering excellent collective performances."
