The architect Alexander Beck, who comes from a middle- sized town in Thuringia and now lives in Frankfurt, has won a prestigious architecture prize for a project to modernize old prefabricated buildings . He is now returning to his old home, where he is supposed to supervise the implementation of his project. The old prefabricated buildings, in which Alexander grew up, are to be completely modernized. Inspired by meeting some old acquaintances, he begins to remember the events of 1988. He had been friends with the siblings Michael and Nicole since childhood, but shortly before they graduate from school there were increasing tensions between the system-compliant FDJ secretary Alex and the loner Michael. At the same time, Alex falls in love with Nicole. He finally tries to have a debate, but the situation escalates and he injures Michael, who later takes his own life. Now he wants to work through this part of his life together with Nicole.
