Big Tom is a German TV drama from 2008. Directed by Niki Stein . The film is based on a true story in Berlin and tells the story of a 12-year-old boy who has to take care of his two younger sisters because his mother has left the children.

action

Twelve-year-old Tom has to look after his two little sisters Sophie (10) and Fanny (8) alone because their mother has moved to live with her new boyfriend, who knows nothing about the children. The mother only looks after the children every now and then and brings money over for the most essential things. Although Tom tries everything to maintain the appearance of an intact family, a neighbor named Cora notices the three children. She tries half-heartedly to get in touch with her mother. However, these attempts always fail because the mother of the three is never at home. At the end of the film, Cora notifies the police and the youth welfare office , because she can no longer see the conditions in which the children live.

Reviews

The film received praise primarily for its touching drama . The Berliner Zeitung wrote : “All in all, Big Tom is so impressively depressing that you don't like to see him at times. But must have seen it. "

Differences from the real story

  • In the film, the children suffer from mental neglect. In the real story, the children's apartment was also littered and dirty.
  • In the film, the neighbor Cora calls the police, not the boy, because he can no longer stand the conditions.
  • In the film there are only three siblings, in the original there are four.
