Captain Pedro's Funny War is a German cloak-and-sword costume and love comedy from 1959 by Wolfgang Becker with Carlos Thompson and Corny Collins in the leading roles.
action
The story takes place in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation around 1700. In Vienna, Emperor Leopold I rules, whose military commander Prince Eugene is busy driving the Turks out of the Balkans piece by piece. But even in the interior of the empire, the emperor sees rebellious enemies everywhere who have to be fought. Many imperial cities do not want to submit to the orders from Vienna, including the small and rather insignificant Trutzingen. Here the city leaders refuse to pay the new special tax of 5000 thalers imposed by the emperor, with which the army, salaries and wars will continue to be financed. In order to enforce the will of Vienna, the handsome captain Pedro Bastiano is sent to Trutzingen to break the resistance of the citizens there. But Pedro doesn't even think about using force, rather he besieges the town in his very own way. When Pedro's soldiers discover a secret passage, they penetrate the city's interior unnoticed. Apart from the one or the other degenduell that Captain Pedro confronts less talented and often outnumbered opponents, the war mainly takes place on the amorous level, on the horizontal plane.
Because his soldiers use the advance in Trutzingen not primarily to try to subjugate the population of Trutzingen, but rather to conquer the hearts and beds of the most handsome Trutzingen women. So it soon comes to intense love affairs between the mercenaries of the imperial troops and the Trutzinger local beauties. Even Captain Pedro sometimes forgets the assignment he was given and jokes around with women, for example with the daughter of the sutler Ludmilla Haberstroh. But then he discovers the lady of his heart in the perky, brunette Charlotte. But she is, of all people, the daughter of the grumpy mayor of Trutzingen, who is responsible for the town's persistent resistance against the imperial troops. This soon puts Captain Pedro in dire straits. The unusual siege escalates when the Emperor's Minister of War Moritz von Persipan suddenly appears, a jagged but also slightly idiotic warrior of old style. He finally wants to see results and even wants to bring Captain Pedro to the gallows for his delaying tactic. But here, too, his opponents know how to help each other.
