Derrick JaVaughn Byars (born April 25, 1984 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, he played as a professional for several clubs in Europe , including the Köln 99ers and ALBA Berlin in the German basketball league , where he won the Beko BBL Cup 2013 with the Berliners . Since 2014 he has been playing in the Eastern European VTB United League for the newcomer Krasny Oktjabr from Volgograd.
Career
After a few games in the NBA Summer League , including at Orlando Magic and the New Orleans Hornets , he moved to the Cologne 99ers in Germany in November 2007, where he played eight games. In January 2008 he moved to the French club Chorale Roanne Basket , where he was used in a game in the top European division ULEB Euroleague , and was with him national runner-up in France. The following season Byars played in the NBA Development League for the Bakersfield Jam . He reached the first playoff round with them and was elected to the All-NBDL Second Team . After further games in the NBA Summer League for the Chicago Bulls , he moved back to the BBL at Alba Berlin in early November 2009, with whom he was able to reach the German Cup final. The following summer, he tried again by participating in the NBA Summer League for the Chicago Bulls to get a professional contract with an NBA club. After this failed again, he signed a contract with Panellinios Athens in the Greek A1 Ethniki for the 2010/11 season . After only five games this contract was terminated and Byars played from January 2011 again for Bakersfield Jam in the Development League.
For the 2011/12 season he initially returned to Europe and played for Cholet Basket in France. There he completed only one Euroleague qualifier and one championship game before the contract was canceled. In the NBA preseason shortened due to a lockout , he was then briefly under contract with the Miami Heat in December 2011 , before playing again for the Bakersfield Jam in the D-League in 2012. At the end of the 2012 season he finally got a contract with the NBA and played his first game for the San Antonio Spurs.
For the 2012/2013 season, Byars did not receive a new contract in the NBA and finally joined Alba Berlin again in November 2012 . There he received a fixed-term contract until the end of December 2012, which was extended until the end of the season, and reached the intermediate round of the 16 best teams in the top-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 with the German club . In the national competitions, however, after winning the Beko BBL Cup 2013 in the first round of the play-offs for the championship, the Berlin team retired early. After the early end of the season in Europe, Byars joined the caciques from Humacao in the Puerto Rican Baloncesto Superior Nacional . Then Byars was in the pre-season squad of the Memphis Grizzlies in his hometown, but was again released from the squad shortly before the start of the season. It was not until the beginning of 2014 that he signed a new contract and switched to "Krasny Oktjabr" ( German Red October ) from Volgograd , who were newly included in the VTB United League 2013/14 for this season .
