description
The Designer Outlets Wolfsburg are the first inner-city designer outlet centers in Germany. The two elliptical main buildings of the center symbolize two ships that docked on the banks of the Mittelland Canal . They are located next to the Phæno Science Center on the former site of Stadtwerke Wolfsburg, which demolished the depot of its subsidiary Wolfsburger Verkehrs GmbH for the construction of the Wolfsburg Designer Outlets in 2006 . In the immediate vicinity of the Designer Outlets Wolfsburg are the ICE main station, the Volkswagen factory and the Volkswagen Arena , the stadium of VfL Wolfsburg . The Autostadt as the Volkswagen Group's amusement park is within sight on the other side of the Mittelland Canal and can be reached via a pedestrian bridge. In about five minutes you can walk to the south-facing city center.
The building ensemble was designed by the architect Gerd Graf from Montabaur. It opened on December 15, 2007. Initially, over 45 manufacturers offered their goods on a sales area of 10,000 m². The reduced branded items come from the previous season, sample collections, production surpluses and 1b goods.
In a second construction phase, which lasted six months and ended in December 2013, a third elliptical commercial building was completed on the site of the outlet center. The sales area increased by 6000 m² to a total of 16,000 m². It offers space for 25 new shops from the retail, catering and service sectors. Around 150 additional jobs were created, increasing the number of employees in the outlet center to around 450.
Since opening, the Designer Outlets Wolfsburg have had over a million visitors a year. In 2011 the 1.5 million mark was exceeded for the first time. Almost half of the visitors come from a catchment area more than 50 kilometers away (including from the major cities of Hamburg , Bremen and Hanover ).
The designer outlet had been in a third construction phase since the beginning of 2017. Another elliptical building was built, which opened on October 24, 2018 and increased the number of shops to 90. The structural expansion increased the sales area to 17,500 m².
