The German Society for Online Research (DGOF) advocates the establishment and further development of online research and the interests of online researchers in Germany. Today the DGOF is an association that takes care of the interests of the actors in the context of online research. The DGOF sees itself as a bridge between different disciplines that use methods of online research (e.g. sociology , psychology , political science , economics , market and opinion research , data science ) and promotes the transfer between science and practice.

History of the DGOF

The DGOF was founded by pioneers of online research - Wolfgang Bandilla, Bernad Batinic , Michael Bosnjak , Ralf Geschke, Lorenz Gräf, Ulf-Dietrich Reips and Andreas Werner . The idea of ​​founding an association to promote online research came about on the fringes of the "Cognition and Web" conference, which took place in 1996 with the participation of the founding members at the Institute for Computer Science and Society at the University of Freiburg. The DGOF was formally established in March 1998 in Mannheim .

The history and work of the DGOF is also closely linked to the German Internet Research List (GIR-L). The GIR-L is a mailing list founded in May 1996 by Andreas Werner and Bernad Batinic with more than 1,200 registered users. The aim of the GIR-L is to discuss social, communication and market research issues relating to the Internet. In 1997, the GIR-L gave rise to the suggestion for the first GOR conference. The mailing list is currently being maintained by Bernad Batinic.

Promotion of online research in science and practice

Scientific research projects

Since 2013, the DGOF has regularly been funding academic research projects that deal with topics and questions in online research. An application for funding can be submitted once a year on the date indicated on the DGOF website.

In addition, the DGOF promotes the next generation of academics by awarding the GOR Thesis Award . This prize - combined with financial support - is awarded once a year by an expert jury as part of the GOR. Particularly outstanding theses (bachelor thesis, master thesis, dissertation) from the field of online research are awarded.

DGOF workshops

DGOF Workshops are a series of events around the topics of innovation and digitization of market and social research. In the workshops, detailed and well-founded information on new, innovative methods and digital developments is given and explained in a practical manner. In this way, the participants are given the knowledge they need to be up to date in the field of applied online research.

The events are intended to enable interested parties to quickly gain an overview of new research methods and central topics in the digital field or to deepen this knowledge with the help of experts who are already dealing with such new developments in online research.

The workshops take place at different locations in Germany. They are aimed at young professionals as well as experienced online researchers.

Collaboration on standards and norms of international market and social research

Together with other market and social research associations, the DGOF has published regulations, including the guideline for online surveys , in the development of which the DGOF played a key role.

The DGOF was also involved in the development of the globally applicable ISO standard ISO 20252: 2019 market, opinion and social research, including the acquisition of knowledge through data analysis , in which the previous standard ISO 26362 Access panels in market, opinion and social research - Vocabulary and service requirements . has risen completely. Research plus

In addition to the GOR, the DGOF organizes a regional series of events called Research plus. The aim of these regional online research events is to disseminate innovative research ideas and to strengthen the networking of researchers in a region. An individual program with several keynote speeches is put together for each evening. Participation in the events is possible after registration and is supported by sponsors. Research plus takes place regularly in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, Mannheim, Munich and Nuremberg (as of March 2019).

Club members and structure

The DGOF has 320 members (as of March 2019). The majority of the members are personal members from the scientific and applied areas of market and social research. The DGOF also has corporate members (51 corporate members, as of March 2019). These are market research institutes, software providers and online panel operators. Four other members are research institutes from the university sector. In addition, the IT security association TeleTrusT Deutschland eV is an associated member of the DGOF.

The club's management consists of a six-person board. The board is elected every two years by the general assembly. The members of the Management Board are (as of March 2019): Otto Hellwig (Chairman), Alexandra Wachenfeld-Schell, Bella Struminskaya, Cathleen Stützer, Florian Keusch and Stefan Oglesby (each Deputy Chair). Cooperations with associations and societies for market and social research

The DGOF maintains contacts with related associations and clubs, especially ADM , ASI and BVM . As central institutions of German market and social research, the four named associations have drawn up the declaration for the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany on the ICC / ESOMAR international code for market and social research . This defines the professional ethical principles and professional code of conduct as part of the professional principles and codes of conduct for German market, opinion and social research, which must always be observed when market, opinion and social research studies are carried out in or from Germany. The four named organizations jointly set up the Council for German Market and Social Research . This is a complaints office that checks compliance with professional principles and professional ethics and sanctions violations. Anyone who, in a specific case, is of the opinion that a market research institution does not adhere to professional principles and rules of ethics can turn to this complaints office. This concerns, for example, the case of advertising calls made under the pretext of market research. The Council of German Market and Social Research examines the complaint and can - if the Council believes the complaint is justified - impose sanctions on the institution concerned.

The DGOF also cooperates with the scientific society of media and communication studies in Germany, the DGPuK , among other things in the form of doctoral workshops.
