German fairy tales and legends

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deutsche Märchen und Sagen is an electronic anthology of public domain collections of folk tales and sagas from Germany, most of which were published in the 19th century. Its editor is the narrative researcher Hans-Jörg Uther .

The collection was published on CD-ROM in 2002 by Directmedia as Volume 80 of the Digital Library series .

The compilation is based on a total of 47 sources. It offers the full text of over 24,000 fairy tales, sagas, customs and legends from Germany. The bibliography for narrative research in the appendix lists over 20,000 titles. The high capacity and search options of the CD spoke in favor of the digital form. As part of the free zeno.org service, the individual collections (under their editors) are also available on the Internet.

Own representation

Uther describes the intention of his selection: “This first electronically recorded selection of collections of fairy tales and sagas between 1770 and 1920 aims to give a representative impression of the diversity of the narrative material and at the same time to document the change that is reflected in the conception of folk poetry: adaptation written sources up to the recordings from oral tradition, from the processing with regard to 'fidelity and truth' within the form up to the romantically transfigured and poetic embellishment of old materials and motifs, which have their roots as early as the 18th century. "

review

With a few exceptions, the CD reflects the most important and influential German collections since the end of the 18th century. Even if scans are missing, the CD, to the extent that it was groundbreaking in German-speaking folklore , had undeniable merits in making reliable editions accessible to research and the general public. The recorded works also include the very rare first printed German collection of sagas by Nachtigal.

The edition was well received in literary studies and folklore. Critical comments include: “Despite the amount, of the 362 collectors in the German-speaking area that Hannelore Jeske has identified, only 116 (32%) can be found at Uther.” Furthermore, “the content indexing, which is the responsibility of the publisher Hans -Jörg Uther falls, unfortunately some wishes open.
