Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander

Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander (born December 27, 1803 in Fischbach near Hirschberg , Silesia , † June 4, 1879 in Quirl , Silesia) was a German pedagogue and Germanist . He put on the largest existing collection of German proverbs .

Life

Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander was the eldest son of Fischbach's village tailor. He attended the school there from 1810. In 1818 he began an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Warmbrunn , which he broke off after six months in order to learn his dream job as a teacher. First he was trained by the village pastor, then from 1822 to 1824 at the Bunzlau teachers' college. He then worked as an assistant teacher in Gießmannsdorf before moving to the Protestant city school in Hirschberg in 1827 . There he practiced the Pestalocian ideas in his mother tongue lessons. He also campaigned for teacher emancipation. His liberal, sometimes called communist, attitude often led to friction with his superiors. This led to a house search and removal from office in 1845. In 1847 he was reinstated after an acquittal, but after the March Revolution in 1848 he had to finally give up the teaching profession in 1849. He was dismissed as a "seducer and seducer to riot and rebellion". He emigrated to the USA in 1850, but returned to Germany the following year.

In 1852 he went into business for himself with a spice shop in Hermsdorf . In 1874 he moved to whisk , a village between Hirschberg and Schmiedeberg to where he died 1879th In the GDR he was seen as a pioneer from liberalism to socialism. The Pedagogical University in Dresden and secondary schools in Magdeburg and Leipzig bore his name.

His linguistic life's work was proverb research . Even as a teacher, he collected these and used them for teaching purposes. He published various collections of proverbs, first for children. From 1862 he created his German Proverbs Lexicon , the largest collection of proverbs to date with over 250,000 entries (according to Walther Killy: Literature Lexicon ). Wander also gives equivalents in many foreign languages to numerous German proverbs.
