Life
Born in Pécs as the son of a cantor , Ernster studied in Budapest and Vienna . His career began in Plauen , where in 1924 and 1925 he sang the role of Hermann in Wagner's opera Tannhäuser and the singer's war on Wartburg . From 1929 he appeared at the Staatstheater Berlin and in the Kroll Opera , where he sang in Paul Hindemith's opera Neues vom Tage under the direction of Otto Klemperer . In 1931 Arturo Toscanini , who held him in high regard , brought him to Bayreuth .
In 1933 he had to leave Germany due to the racial policy of the Nazis and went to Austria. In 1938 he traveled to the USA for a tour and did not return to Hungary until two years later. In the meantime, Jewish singers were also banned from performing there . Only at Omike in the Budapest Goldmark Hall was there still an opportunity for Jewish artists to perform in public. In 1944 he was deported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He was in the group of 1683 Hungarian Jews who were able to travel to Switzerland through the organization of Rudolf Kasztner .
After the war he sang in Basel and then at the Metropolitan Opera , where he gave 175 performances between 1946 and 1963. Then he moved back to Switzerland. In Hungary he last appeared in 1966 as Sarastro in the Magic Flute , which was performed in the open-air theater on Margaret Island. He died in Zurich in 1981.
