Diocese of Rab
The diocese of Rab ( Latin Dioecesis Arbensis ) is a former Catholic diocese and today's titular diocese with a former seat in the city of Rab on the Dalmatian island of the same name in Croatia . The Church of St. Mary of the Assumption in Rab served as a cathedral.
history
The diocese of Rab is believed to have been established shortly after the Edict of Milan , as several episcopal seats were created in the ancient Roman province of Dalmatia during this period . The first information about the diocese is provided by Athanasius of Alexandria , who describes in his notes how the Dalmatian bishops visit the Council of Serdica (342/343).
The first bishop of Rab mentioned by name in the documents was Titianus, who participated in the provincial synods in Salona in 530 and 533 . The importance of the diocese at that time is also reflected in the fact that the Bishop of Rab was the only one to whom the attribute Bishop of the Holy Diocese was added. At that time, the diocese of Rab, like the neighboring bishoprics of Krk and Osor , belonged to the archdiocese of Salona. In the documents for the second council of Split in 928, which was mainly about territorial disputes between the Dalmatian bishoprics, it is mentioned that the island of Pag and part of the coastal region of Velebit also belonged to the diocese.
In the 12th century the bishopric of Rab was a very important town in the upper Adriatic region . At the request of the then Bishop Andreas, Pope Alexander III consecrated . In 1177 on a trip from Zadar to Venice, the impressive west facade of the late medieval cathedral, designed in the Tuscan style .
The last bishop of Rab was Giovanni Pietro Galzigna (1795–1823). After his death, the diocese of Rab remained vacant. On June 30, 1828 she was finally by Pope Leo XII. with its bull Locum Beati Petri dissolved together with the neighboring diocese of Osor and incorporated into the diocese of Krk .
Titular diocese from 1933
105 years after its dissolution, the Rab diocese was restored in 1933 as the titular diocese of Arba as the titular diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. The current titular bishop is the Brazilian auxiliary bishop Júlio César Souza de Jesus (* 1971).
