action

Around 1870: When Gabriel von Eisenstein was sentenced to arrest, he had fun on the advice of his friend Dr. Falcon after a little earlier. Little does he know that Falke wants to return the favor for an earlier prank that Eisenstein played on him. The alleged arrest of her husband by Eisenstein's wife Rosalinde comes in handy, so she can enjoy herself with the singing teacher Alfred undisturbed. Before that, she let her maid Adele go. It is inconvenient for Rosalinde, however, that prison director Frank shows up personally to pick up her husband. In order not to fall into a wrong light, Alfred has no choice but to pretend to be her husband, out of consideration for his lover. As a result, he ends up in prison instead of Gabriel von Eisenstein.

In the meantime, people are having a great time in Prince Orlofsky's drawing room. Eisenstein appears in a role, as does a young artist who is introduced as Olga, but who Eisenstein identifies as his wife's maid Adele, even if the young lady denies this. Prison director Frank is also present, as is Rosalinde, disguised as a Hungarian countess. Dr. Falke has made sure that she comes with the discreet hint that her husband is also present. This does not recognize his wife and is carried away by the "Hungarian Countess". Rosalinde steals a pocket watch from her husband, whom she naturally recognized despite the disguise. Since the champagne is abundantly awarded, Eisenstein gives the best in a tipsy state, as he once Dr. Falcon had embarrassed when he exposed him in a bat costume to the mockery of his fellow men after both had previously attended a masked ball. Since then, the falcon has been nicknamed "bat".

When Frank started his job as prison director the next morning with his head still foggy, he asked the alcohol-addicted cell locker Frosch to tell him what had happened in the meantime. This can be seen long and broad about it. When Eisenstein appears and wants to begin his sentence, he learns, to his great amazement, from Frosch that he had already done that yesterday. When Eisenstein sees who is sitting there for him and then his wife Rosalinde turns up, he suddenly realizes that Alfred and his wife are having a relationship. When he tries to confront Rosalinde, she holds the stolen pocket watch under his nose and von Eisenstein becomes very meek. Shortly afterwards, the whole party meets with Prince Orlofsky and Dr. Hawk a. Falke explained to those present that everything that had happened the last two days was the “revenge of the bat”. And Adele's wish to come to the stage is still being fulfilled, because Prince Orlofsky promises her to support her.
