The opera singer Rodolfo Lassparri and the singer Rosa Castaldi are hired by the rich Mrs. Claypool for the director of the opera in New York , Herman Gottlieb. Lassparri tries again and again to hook up with Castaldi. But she is in love with Ricardo Baroni, a singer from the choir . Since he is not engaged (which would lead to the two being separated), his friend Fiorello intervenes. He places him on Otis B. Driftwood, who is hooking up with Mrs. Claypool. Driftwood thinks they can hire Lassparri, but signs a deal with Baroni. When he discovers the fraud, the contract is broken.

Are as Driftwood, Mrs. Claypool, Gottlieb, Lassparri and Castaldi went on board the ship, discovered Driftwood that he Fiorello, Tomasso and Ricardo Baroni in his case has taken on board and that as with stowaways with by America drive. When they are discovered shortly before arrival, they are arrested. You can escape to the cabin of three famous Russian pilots. When they overwhelm the pilots and are greeted in their place with a speech, they fly up. They flee to Driftwood, but the police promptly visit them. To make matters worse, Driftwood loses his job at the theater and the four of them are out on the street. They secretly break into the theater and prevent Lasparri's appearance. Since he cannot be found, Baroni has to step in for him. He gets his chance and he can use it. Baroni and Castaldi are dating again, and New York audiences are celebrating the two as new stars.

Reviews

“Exuberant, but not very exciting grotesque . Outdated."

- 6000 films. Handbook V of the Catholic film criticism

“The first Marx Brothers film with a continuous plot, which, however, remains conventional and satirically exaggeratedly meaningless. The play on words and actions of the often brilliant comedians set the highlights . "

“Circus passes and opera heroes. A mostly silly comedy with a lot of amusing clowneries. "

backgrounds

The film contains some classic scenes from the Marx Brothers:

  • The negotiation between Groucho and Chico about the contract with Lassparri: they keep cutting the contract until there is only a narrow strip left. They are in a bar, one foot on the ko Lassparri lying on the ground.
  • Driftwood moves into his tiny cabin and finds the three stowaways: first he orders food for all three and gradually two housekeeping, the manicure, the ship plumber and the stoker, the cleaning lady, a girl who is looking for his aunt, and the three stewards who bring the food into the cabin. Finally there are fourteen people in the room including the huge suitcase. In the end, Harpo lies on the stewards' trays. When Mrs. Claypool comes with the bellboy and opens the door, everyone falls towards them.
  • "Speech" from Harpo at the port, during which he only drinks several liters of water.
  • The sheriff's visit to Driftwood, who is looking for stowaways: while he is always walking in circles through the living room, balcony and bedroom, the four of them are fleeing from him, clearing the furniture from the living room into the bedroom and vice versa.
