The band with a core of the singer and guitarist Frank Spilker , the bassist Thomas Wenzel and the drummer Christoph Leich was founded in 1991 after Spilker, who was born in Bad Salzuflen, was drawn to Hamburg, just like major greats of the Hamburgers , which were rejected for a long time today School accepted artists such as Bernadette La Hengst , Jochen Distelmeyer , Thomas Wenzel or Bernd Begemann . From the herbaceous formation Soup de Nüll, keyboard virtuoso Richard von der Schulenburg joined the band in 2000 , today mainly active as RvdS on his label It's. Thomas Wenzel and Christoph Leich left the band in mid-2018. With Hey Dealer , the first single of the new album Die Sterne , which was announced for February 2020 and which Frank Spilker recorded with various guest musicians, was released in November 2019 . Spilker called the new constellation of stars "less band, more collaboration."

style

Important influences in the music of the stars are indie pop , hip hop , soul and funk with electronic influences . Lyrically, the band moves thematically between politics and private life, but dispenses with clear slogans. In their early stages, they were even celebrated in the pop press as the successors to Ton Steine ​​Scherben . In 1998 they were invited to North America by the Goethe Institute as ambassadors for German pop culture .

Side projects

Bassist Thomas Wenzel is also a member of the band Die Goldenen Zitronen and makes theater music together with his wife Peta Devlin . The singer Frank Spilker released the album With All These People in 2008 under the name Frank Spilker Gruppe and is now also active as a writer. I don't care, but I can't prove it was published by Hoffmann & Campe in 2013 . Christoph Leich was active in front of the stars with Kolossale Jugend and still plays with the surf band Los Apollos.

The line We had sex in the rubble and dreamed from the single Trrrmmer from 1996 became the title of a non-fiction book by producer Tim Renner about the music industry in 2013 . The song What just ruined you? was processed by Marie Kreutzer in the feature film What just ruined us in such a way, the title of the film is derived from the song.
