action
Inka, a young teacher, has a ride to the Black Forest. During a rest in the Holltal, the driver Katharina disappears without a trace. Since the local police are slowly investigating, Katharina's ex-husband Matthias Auerbach, himself a forensic technician, drives to the Holltal.
He encounters an icy silence in the village and the mayor Beierle seems to be holding all the strings in hand. He orders the sons of the petrol station owner Mandy Kreuzer to use force to make it clear to Auerbach that he is not wanted. But Auerbach discovers the skeleton of a woman near the twin rocks in the forest, where Katharina disappeared. Although the woman has been dead for several years, the DNA matches that of Katharina's.
Auerbach, does not want to believe that it should be about his ex-wife. Desperate, he continues his research with Inka's help on site. He comes across a legend about the twin rocks and a pact with the devil that the Holltal residents are said to have made during the Thirty Years' War . It turns out that the skeleton in the forest is Katharina's twin sister, who was killed by her father, Mayor Beierle. Auerbach was deliberately lured into the Holltal by Katharina in order to solve the murder of her sister and to take revenge on the father.

criticism
“Solidly staged, well-acted (television) thriller about myths and superstitions. Still, more staging bite would have done the subject good; instead of creating suspense and thrill using atmospherically creepy scenarios, the film relies too much on the irritating soundtrack. "
“And at the beginning of the film, it certainly seems that the viewer will be facing an exciting evening. But with increasing broadcasting time, the badly constructed story becomes more and more bloodless, just seems to be pulled by the hair - fairy tales and myths from the south of the republic or not. It is also a shame that the resolution of the mystery is revealed quite early. The last half hour of the film seems a bit superfluous with one or the other length. It also becomes difficult when the viewer has to follow quite long dialogues without any subtitles without knowing the flabby dialect. "
“The film by genre connoisseur Thorsten Näter is almost in danger of being overwhelmed by classic thriller incidents: the gruesome idyll of the enchanted Black Forest backdrop, the enrichment and connection of its story with a legendary myth or the great stranger that penetrates a manageable microcosm as a secretive ventilator . In “Die Toten vom Schwarzwald”, however, all these ingredients come together to form a homogeneous whole. If after an hour or so, almost disappointed, you think the secret has been revealed, you have only stumbled upon half the story. The tragic drama that ultimately emerges finds expression in all its dimensions in Heidy Forster's face. It is undoubtedly the greatest trump card in a great ensemble in which Traugott Buhre, who died last year, also caused great theater in his last TV role. "
“Black Forest, very dark: Heino Ferch convinces in a twin thriller that is not entirely convincing.
[...] The story of the father's manslaughter of one of his twin daughters; the story of the other twin daughter who slips into the sisterly role as wife; the late revenge on the cruel father to finally see him condemned as a murderer: All that would be complex enough. The fact that people in the dark Black Forest are always hidden in the right place behind the tree and always appear at the right moment like goblins - that overstrains the patient logic of the audience. “Oh,” groans the murderer's wife, “our lives went upside down a long time ago.” Oh, sighs the viewer: It's a shame about the good acting up to the supporting roles: This crime thriller too gets out of hand too early Joints of the rationally comprehensible.
