action

A few weeks before his retirement, the New York Police Detective Sergeant Edward Delaney is confronted with a street murder. The victim was hit in the skull with an unusual object. Delaney receives from pathologist Dr. Ferguson advised that the murder weapon had to have a special shape, but could not be precisely identified. Delaney discovers that there was a previous murder in the same district that was carried out in a similar manner. He is continuing the investigation in different directions. On the one hand, he is investigating whether there have been similar murders in the city. On the other hand, he tries to involve Mr. Langley, the curator of a historical museum, who is professionally familiar with objects that roughly correspond to the murder weapon. Then he also meets Mrs. Gilbert, the wife of the last murder victim.

Meanwhile, his own wife Barbara is another focus of Delaney's worries. She had to be hospitalized for a kidney removal.

The district gets a new boss who wants to "slim down" and modernize above all. He doesn't care that important skills are lost in the process, the main thing is that he can distinguish himself as an energetic and resolute boss. Delaney is only allowed to finish the case because he is about to retire. His efforts are ultimately worth it, because Mr. Langley finds an object that could be the weapon of the murder: an item of equipment for mountaineers. At the same time, it is found that similar murders occurred in different parts of New York for two years. Mr. Langley finally finds the right murder weapon.

Fortunately, the sports shop that sells the items potentially used as murder weapons keeps a record of where the customers live, and its boss is ready to provide Delaney with the buyers' addresses.

criticism
