The golden yurt is a German- Mongolian DEFA fairy tale film by Gottfried Kolditz and Rabschaa Dordschpalam from 1961. It was a joint production of DEFA and Mongolfilm.

action

Years ago, the wise Arat gave old Pagwa a chest that should never be opened: Although it does not contain anything, its internal pressure ensures that the nearby lake holds its water and thus supplies land and cattle. Although the old man believes that the chest is actually full of gold, he guards it and hides it from his children. The youngest son, Dawadorshi, is righteous, but the two older brothers, Jorrup and Jombo, are greedy slackers. Arat appears to Pagwa in the form of the wolf hunter Arrasch and confirms to the old man that the box only holds the water of the lake and is therefore vital for Pagwa and his herd. The older brothers, however, believe in a treasure chest and secretly try to open it several times. Pagwa sinks into a gloomy mood when he realizes that his older sons are trying to betray him.

The young Dawadorshi, who is a thorn in the side of his brothers, sets out to become the wise Arat, who is supposed to free his father from melancholy . On the way he meets settlers who are on the verge of dying of thirst because their river no longer carries any water. Dawadorshi promises to seek help from the wise Arat. He also wants the blind girl Sarren-Gerrel to see again. With wise Arat, who, contrary to the law, farms the land to alleviate the hunger of the poor, he receives the answers to his questions. The settlers should follow the river to the source, where they will find out why it has dried up. Sarren-Gerrel will see again when her predestined husband touches her left hand. Dawadorshi's father will be happy again when he takes the treasure that remains to him tightly to his heart.

Dawadorshi first returns to Sarren-Gerrel and her mother. When he tells them the saying of the wise Arat and takes Sarren-Gerrel's hand, she can suddenly see again. Dawadorshi is her destined husband. Together they ride on to the settlers and follow the river to its source. It is closed by a huge stone made of gold , which both roll away. A fish got caught in the smaller stones, which Dawadorshi freed. The fish begins to speak and takes the young man into the realm of the water khans . It turns out that the fish is the daughter of the water khan. The Wasserkhan himself would like to keep Dawadorshi in his realm. As Dawadorshi rejects this because he had a bride and a sick father, gives him water Khan three gifts that he should use as because he can use only once: a magic hat , a golden hammer that after seven times knocking a golden Yurt appears and a sheepskin that shakes three times and brings three hours of rain.

Dawadorshi returns to his father with Sarren-Gerrel. He is close to misery, as the two sons have opened the chest in the meantime. The lake has dried up and both brothers have moved away with the herd and their yurt, leaving their father behind. Dawadorshi brings the herd back, protected by the magic cap. With the hammer he raises the golden yurt, which now serves as safe accommodation for the family. With the fur he finally lets rain come, which saves the land from withering and also fills the lake with water again. The two brothers have now recognized their wrongdoing and are helping to secure the lake. They are taken back into the family by their father.

Most of the golden yurt was filmed on original locations in Mongolia. Most of the characters were embodied by Mongolian actors. The trick shots for the film were made by Ernst Kunstmann .

The film premiered on July 13, 1961 at the Babylon cinema in Berlin on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Mongolian People's Republic .

criticism

The critics praised the fact that the film lives "through the excellent photographic connection between man and landscape". The production design “shows that the shooting team is in love with the Mongolian landscape”.

Clear criticism was made of the scenes in the world of the water khan. The “underwater strip tease of the playmates in the realm of the water khan” was “a derailment” and “tasteless ...”, said one critic. Other critics called the scenes around the Wasserkhan "close to the border where the kitsch begins for many people", and still others found that the scene was out of the ordinary, but was a comprehensible "stylistic dangling".

For the film service , The Golden Yurt was "a children's film that only met minor requirements in terms of form and content."
