The Barranca District is located in the Barranca Province in the Lima region of western Peru . The Barranca district was founded in 1823. The 153.76 km² district had 68,324 inhabitants at the 2017 census. In 1993 the population was 46,283, in 2007 it was 61,178. The administrative seat is the provincial capital Barranca . Desert vegetation dominates the barren hills. Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the lowlands. The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) crosses the district in a northerly direction.

Geographical location

The district of Barranca is centrally located in the province of Barranca. It extends from the Pacific coast nearly 23 km inland. The district has a coastline of about 6 km. The Río Pativilca flows to the sea along the northern border of the district. The Barranca district borders on the Pativilca district to the north, the Cochas district ( Ocros province ) to the east and the Supe and Supe Puerto districts to the south .
