The district of Cochas is located in the province of Ocros in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​417 km². The 2017 census counted 1512 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 945, in 2007 1298. The district administration is located in the village of Huanchay at an altitude of 1350  m . Huanchay is located 15 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Ocros .

Geographical location

The district of Cochas is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the southwest of the province of Ocros. The Río Pativilca crosses the district to the west. The lower reaches of the Río Ocros runs along the northeastern district boundary.

The district of Cochas is bordered to the south and southwest by the district of Supe , to the west by the district of Pativilca (both in the province of Barranca ), to the northwest by the districts of San Pedro and Ocros , to the northeast by the districts of Santiago de Chilcas and Acas and in the Southeast to the Ámbar district ( Huaura province ).
