The Barranca district is located in the Datem del Marañón Province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was founded on October 26, 1886. It has an area of 7059 km². At the 2017 census, 14,832 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 7,817, in 2007 11,864. The administrative seat is the provincial capital of San Lorenzo , located 128 m high on the north bank of the Río Marañón , with 9503 inhabitants (status 2017).
Geographical location
The Barranca district is located in the southwest of the Datem del Marañón province. The district is located on the eastern flank of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera on the western edge of the Peruvian Amazon . The Río Marañón crosses the north of the district in an easterly direction. The district extends in the east to the confluence of the Río Pastaza coming from the north into the Río Marañón. North of the Río Marañón, the district includes the catchment areas of the smaller rivers Río Sasipagua and Río Uritocayu. The larger part of the district in the south is mainly drained via the Río Potro.
The district of Barranca borders in the northwest with the districts Manseriche and Morona , in the northeast with the district Pastaza , in the southeast with the districts Jeberos and Cahuapanas , in the south with the district Moyobamba ( province Moyobamba ) and in the southwest with the district Yambrasbamba ( province Bongará ) .
