In the fall of 1977 a land conflict escalated in the hamlet of Huacataz in the north of the district. When the police tried to arrest a group of farmers from Huacataz who had occupied a pasture in 1972 , they disarmed the police. As a result, on December 28, 1977, a raid squad ( Guardia de asalto ) shot at the residents of Huacataz with submachine guns, killing four and injuring sixteen farmers. This attack became known nationwide as the "Huacataz Massacre".
