The district of San Miguel is located in the province of La Mar in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on March 18, 1861. It has an area of ​​451 km². The 2017 census counted 11,168 inhabitants. The seat of the provincial and district administration is the small town of San Miguel at 2661  m high with 3948 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Miguel is about 30 km northeast of the regional capital Ayacucho .

Geographical location

The district of San Miguel is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the central west of the province of La Mar. The Río Torobamba drains the area to the southeast to the Río Pampas .

The district of San Miguel borders in the southwest on the districts Acocro , Acos Vinchos and Quinua (all three in the province Huamanga ), in the northwest on the district Tambo , in the east on the districts Samugari , Achihuay and Anco and in the southeast on the district Chilcas .
