The Vilcabamba district is located in the Daniel Alcides Carrión province in the Pasco region in central Peru . The district was founded on September 6, 1920. It has an area of ​​82.5 km². The 2017 census counted 2058 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2232, in 2007 it was 1894. The district administration is located in the 3445  m high village of Vilcabamba with 1433 inhabitants (as of 2017). Vilcabamba is 7.5 km east of the provincial capital, Yanahuanca .

Geographical location

The Vilcabamba district is centrally located in the Andean highlands in the Daniel Alcides Carrión province. It has a lengthwise extension in the NNW-SSE direction of 16 km and a maximum width of 7.5 km. The Río Ushugoyu, a right tributary of the Río Chaupihuaranga, drains the area to the north.

The district of Vilcabamba borders in the southwest and in the west with the district Yanahuanca in the north with the district Tápuc and in the east with the district Chacayán .
