Dmitri Petrovich Wolkonski ( Russian : Дмитрий Петрович Волконский; * 1764 ; † September 30, 1812 in Ryazan ) was a Russian prince , lieutenant general of the Imperial Russian Army and military governor in Arkhangelsk .

Life

DP Volkonsky served in the Preobrazhensky body guard regiment and was promoted from lieutenant to captain on March 4, 1788 . On December 31, 1792, he was promoted to colonel . He was deployed in the war against the Polish rebels in the Russo-Polish War and successfully defended the fortifications of the city of Vilnius . In 1797 he was promoted to brigadier and in 1798 to lieutenant general . In 1801 he became a member of the committee for the affairs of the army, chaired by Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich Romanov (1779-1831). In 1804 he was in command in the Caucasus and in 1807 was dismissed from the Imperial Army as Quartermaster General . He died after a long illness on September 30, 1812 in the village of Malinki in Ryazan Oblast and was temporarily buried there.

Origin and family

Knit DP Volkonsky came from the sex of Rurik and belonged to the princely family Wolkonski on. His father was Prince Pyotr Alexandrovich Volkonsky (1724–1801), who was married to Anisya Ivanovna Gagin (1737–1782). His nephew was the Russian field marshal Pyotr Michailowitsch Volkonski (1776-1852) from the Baltic line.

Dmitri Petrovich married Katherina Alexejewna (1770-1855), born Princess Melgunov, whose father AP Melgunow was governor of Vologda and Arkhangelsk governorate . Under his leadership the development of provincial and district towns was promoted, Suchanowo was one of these places. Katharina inherited the family mansion , promoted art and construction in Suchanowo and initiated charitable works. In September 1812, after the death of her husband, she had the Volkonsky mausoleum built. It was designed in 1813 by the Swiss architect Domenico Gilardi and built together with Afanassi Grigoryevich Grigoryev, built as a memorial for war heroes and the final resting place of DP Volkonsky. Two poor houses for disabled war veterans were set up in a larger complex . Due to Katharina's close family ties to the Tsar's court, Alexander I (1777-1825) was her nephew and friend of her husband, she appeared as a patron of former soldiers and was appointed lady- in- waiting . Because of her commitment she was nicknamed “la tante militaire”. In recognition of her social and cultural achievements, she was awarded the Russian Order of St. Catherine .
