Rembert Dodoens

Rembert Dodoens [Dodonaeus], actually Rembert van Joenckema (* 29. June 1516 / 17 in Mechelen , † 10. March 1585 in Leiden ) was a Flemish botanist and physician . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Dodoens ".

Life

Rembert studied medicine at the University of Leuven and attended medical schools in France , Italy and Germany . In 1535 he received his doctorate . From 1539 he worked as a city doctor in Mechelen and in 1574 became court physician to Emperor Maximilian II. There were many differences of opinion with Johann Crato von Krafftheim . In 1580 he retired to Brabant, traveled on to Cologne and Antwerp and in 1582 became a professor of medicine in Leyden.

His scriptum Historiae pemptades sex sive libri XXX from 1583 is considered one of the leading works of the late 16th century. In this work he divided the plants into 26 groups and introduced many new families.

His book Cruydt boek from 1554 looks good. The text is in old Flemish and was later translated into French, English and Latin. Cruydt is a Flemish word and means “herb”, “ spice ”, “medicinal plant”, “(tea) drug”. So it is a kind of herbal book that describes the use of herbs for use in the kitchen as well as for medicinal purposes.

He had a son of the same name who matriculated at the University of Padua on February 18, 1578 and later became a doctor in Middelburg .

Taxa named after Dodoens

Charles Plumier named a genus Dodonaea in his honor . Carl von Linné later did not take over this genus, but placed it in the genus Ilex of the plant family of the holly family (Aquifoliaceae).

Linnaeus named the genus Dodonaea of the soap tree family (Sapindaceae) after him .

The rosemary fireweed ( Epilobium dodonaei ) is also named after Dodoens.

Honors

The main belt asteroid (10068) Dodoens , discovered in 1989, was named after him.
