The Cathedral Monastery of Brandenburg (historically Cathedral Chapter St. Peter and Paul ) is today a Protestant institution in Brandenburg an der Havel at the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul in Brandenburg an der Havel . It has existed since 1161, with brief interruptions.

History up to the Reformation

There is no historical information about the existence of the first cathedral chapter since the foundation of the Brandenburg diocese in 948. It was probably very small and was located in the cathedral area of Brandenburg Castle. In 983 it was dissolved.

1161 was Prämonstratenser - Chorherrenstift St. Gotthardt in the Old Town Brandenburg elevated to cathedral chapter and moved in 1165 to the northern half of Brandenburg. The main tasks were to conduct daily church services and to support the bishop in the administration of the diocese.

In 1435 a subsidiary was founded on the Marienberg. In 1507 the cathedral monastery was converted into a secular collegiate monastery.

Structures

The cathedral chapter belonged to the Premonstratensian order from 1161 to 1506 . That meant that the canons lived under a rule of the order , which meant a common life with predominant presence on site, common property and celibacy. The main tasks were the implementation of daily church services and the common monastic life. The number of canons changed, in the 15th century 30 canons with six novices and four lay brothers were named. The chapter was presided over by a provost who was at the same time Archdeacon of Brandenburg and representative of the bishop in absenteeism and vacancy. Over the course of time, the latter was less and less concerned with matters relating to the cathedral. This was managed and organized internally by a prior and other officials.

The cathedral monastery owned extensive property, especially in the vicinity, in the 14th century 30 villages with further free float, fields, meadows, forests, lakes, vineyards, as well as income from church patrons, foundations and pensions. The ownership of the bishopric and the bishop was not one of them.

In the cathedral monastery there was spiritual training for the canons and an extensive monastery library, some studied at universities since the 14th century.

When it was converted into a collegiate monastery in 1507, some structures changed. The canons now received separate income and no longer had to be on site. At the daily church services they could be represented by Vilare. The number of canon positions was limited to 16 with personal benefices (so-called majors ) and six more positions without personal income ( minors ), plus a provost. A dean was now in charge of the internal direction , followed as the highest dignities by a cantor for organizing church services and a cellarer for economic management.

Further development

After the Reformation was introduced in the monastery in 1544, the cathedral chapter lost a large part of its property and its powers, but remained as a Protestant monastery. In 1809 it was dissolved in the course of Napoleonic secularization and re-established in 1823. From 1930 it was a foundation under public law, then again a Protestant foundation.

In 1946 it became part of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg and since 2003 within the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia.
