Map of Dordabis in Namibia

Dordabis is a settlement in the region Khomas in Namibia . Dordabis is located in a dry river valley ( Rivier ) south of the Grimmrück ridge , around 75 kilometers southeast of Windhoek .

Dordabis belongs to the constituency of Windhoek-Land and can be reached via the main road C23 . To the north is the Arnhem Cave .

economy

The area around Dordabis is considered to be the center of the Namibian Karakul sheep farming . In 2013 an iron ore mine is to be put into operation in the immediate vicinity of Dordabis . Around 1.8 million tons of ore will then be extracted there every year . In addition, around 600,000 tons of magnetite and hematite are to be extracted. The local farmers fear an increase in informal settlements and an excessive exploitation of the local groundwater reserves .

Others

There is a prison in Dordabis . From July 2000 to December 2002, 82 Angolans were detained there without trial . They had been apprehended and interned there as alleged members of the Jonas Savimbi gang, which marched in the far north of Namibia in 2000 . The longstanding detention of Angolan nationals without charge has repeatedly attracted international criticism, especially from human rights organizations . In addition, the crimes committed could not be proven beyond doubt to the prisoners . Shortly before Christmas 2002, they were released and immediately deported to Angola. At least 4 prisoners had already died on the prisoner transport or in the prison of Dordabis by then.

Partnerships

The "Freundeskreis Dordabis / Namibia" has existed in Unna since 1984 . This organizes mutual visits and supports the congregation in some projects, such as building a church, producing school uniforms, creating gardens and maintaining a student hostel.
