The Dortenbach is a 3.2 km long body of water in the area of Rietberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Gütersloh , which flows into the upper Ems from the right in the settlement area of the core city .

River course

The Dortenbach arises at 79  m above sea level. NN in the Feldmark east of Rietberg within the nature reserve Rietberger Emsniederung from the confluence of several ditches running towards Westerwiehe ; the most important of these rises to the east of this district in the hills there and is a little longer than the Dortenbach itself. The Dortenbach flows off in a westerly direction and, after leaving the protected area, runs through the grounds of the Rietberger Gartenschaupark. In the further course of the Dortenbach runs through the northern core town and flows into the Ems from the right at the western edge of the settlement.

Catchment area

The catchment area has an approximately lenticular contour with the long axis from east to west and lies between the immediate catchment area of the Ems itself in the south and that of its tributary Sennebach in the north, which behind the aforementioned hills in the far east in the area of the Steinhorster Bruch der Ems comes very close and flows into it a little further down the Dortenbach. The height in the catchment area is around 93  m above sea level in the area of the hills at the east end . NN the largest.

Characteristic

The Dortenbach is a typical lowland creek of the Ems sand plain with a low mean bed gradient of only 0.9 ‰ and therefore a low flow velocity. In the upper reaches, the stream mostly runs through arable and pasture areas , where it has remained very close to nature. On the lower reaches through the Rietberg settlement area, however, it was developed rather remote from nature.

history

Obersee in the garden show park

After the construction of dikes and dams on the Emslauf, the Dortenbach blocked itself permanently in front of its receiving waters , which led to a heavy silting of the bottom and threatened the surrounding area near the mouth with flooding. For this reason, the stream was expanded in some sections between 1987 and 1990. Because it was not possible to acquire the necessary space for a complete expansion, consideration was given to building a retention basin in the east of Rietberg.

After the city of Rietberg was awarded the contract to host the State Garden Show 2008 in April 2006 , the opportunity arose to include the planned retention and overflow basin in the garden show area to be created, thereby combining flood protection with use for local recreation . With the Upper and Lower Lakes, two neighboring bodies of water were created, which were connected to both the Dortenbach and the neighboring Markgraben via a trench system . The floods will accumulate over a large area in the future.
