Louis Douzette (1900)

Louis Douzette (born September 25, 1834 in Tribsees as Carl Ludwig Christoph Douzette , † February 21, 1924 in Barth ) was a German painter.

Life

When he was seven years old, the family from Tribsees moved to Franzburg . At the age of 14 he finished school and trained as a room painter with his father. In winter his father, who had attended the art academy in Berlin when he was young, gave him his first lessons in drawing. In 1852 the family moved to Barth.

Louis Douzette went to Berlin at the age of 21 and became a student of the Berlin painter Hermann Eschke . Since 1860 he stayed regularly on the Baltic coast , on Rügen and the Darß . In 1863, Douzette became a member of the Berlin Artists' Association . In 1878 he traveled to Paris , where he became acquainted with the French plein air painting of the realistic Barbizon school .

Douzette was associated with the artist group in Ahrenshoop . From 1895 he lived in Barth again until the end of his life. In 1896 he became a professor at the Berlin Academy of the Arts . His late-romantic mood pictures of night landscapes earned him the name “moonlight douzette”. On the occasion of his 76th birthday, the city of Barth granted him honorary citizenship on September 25, 1910 .

Louis Douzette was married to Louise Donner (1839–1890) for 25 years. One of his sons-in-law was the painter Adolf Gustav Döring (1848–1938).
