Downtown is a piece of music by the US hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis from 2015, which appeared on their second album, This Unruly Mess Ive Made . Downtown was recorded in July 2015 with lead singers Eric Nally, Melle Mel , Kool Moe Dee and Grandmaster Caz . The official release took place on August 27, 2015, along with the release of the music video on YouTube . A year after its release, the video had over 126 million views.

According to producer Ryan Lewis , the style of the single and the video can be classified into the late 1970s and early 1980s and attempts have been made to combine the genres of hip-hop and rock 'n' roll . In addition, influences from funk , glam-pop and rap can be identified.

Video

The lavishly produced music video was directed by Jason Koenig, who also directed the music videos for Can't Hold Us and White Walls . Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were also involved in the production of the video. Ryan Lewis' hometown Spokane in Washington state served as the backdrop . In the video is former American baseball player Ken Griffey Jr. to see.

Reviews

The comparison to Mark Ronson's uptown funk was struck from many quarters and downtown was described as a hip-hop variant of it. Furthermore, the humorous performance, presented both in the lyrics and visually in the accompanying video, is highlighted. Extremely critical voices came in 2015 from the US magazine Time , in which the song was listed in the Top 10 (of the) Worst Songs (English for: The 10 worst songs ).

Commercial win

The initial placement of Downtown took place on 12 September 2015 the US Billboard Hot 100 94th place on the release of Downtown followed in the first two days 11,000 downloads and 886,000 streaming views , which generated almost exclusively by the views of the music video were. The following week, after performing at the MTV Video Music Awards , the single was ranked 18th on the Billboard Hot 100 and 95,000 digital copies were sold. Downtown in the United States was streamed 5.7 million times this week. The highest chart placement in the Billboard Hot 100 was on October 31, 2015 at number 12. In November 2015, 772,000 copies were sold in the USA by then. In Australia , it was first placed on September 13, 2015 at number 9 in the Australian Singles Charts . The last Australian placement was on March 13, 2016 at number 45.

The song entered the German single charts on September 4, 2015 at number 39 and was listed for the last time on December 11, 2015 at position 74. Downtown's highest chart performance was at number 30 and was represented in the German charts for a total of 15 weeks.

Downtown was used as background music in the trailers for the US films Dirty Grandpa and Pets .
