Dr. Quinn - Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman is a western / family / doctor series that was filmed in six seasons from 1993 to 1998. Jane Seymour plays the title role .
action
The action takes place in the USA around 1867: The doctor Dr. Michaela Quinn gets a job in the small mountain town of Colorado Springs and leaves her wealthy family in Boston . The residents initially thought it was Dr. Michael Quinn and want to send her away immediately after the mix-up is noticed.
But Dr. Quinn, henceforth “Dr. Mike "called, is persistent and stays. She has to fight the prejudice that a woman cannot be a good doctor. It also takes action against the intolerance of the settlers towards the Cheyenne Indians , who are suppressed by General George Armstrong Custer in their Indian reservations. In the course of the series, other minority problems and exclusions are dealt with again and again, for example from Afro-Americans , Jewish traders or people with faces disfigured by fire. Opponents are the bar owner Hank Lawson, the barber Jake Slicker and the merchant Lauren Bray.
In her private life, she also has to face new challenges. Charlotte Cooper is the only woman to support the new doctor. Before she dies, she entrusts her children Matthew, Colleen and Brian to the care of Dr. Quinn on. From now on she takes on all maternal duties. She also falls in love with Byron Sully, a friend of Cheyenne. The two later marry and have a daughter, Katie.

Remarks
- In the pilot , Robert E., Loren Bray and Jake Slicker are portrayed by different actors than in the remaining 147 episodes: Robert E. by Ivory Ocean , Loren Bray by Guy Boyd and Jake Slicker by Colm Meaney . Meaney decided not to continue playing the role because he accepted an offer to appear on the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .
- Jason Leland Adams played General Custer in the two-part play In Deadly Peril . The role of the bank owner of Colorado Springs, Preston A. Lodge III, he took over only from the 4th season.
- The country singer Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter Cash in some episodes had guest appearances.
- Erika Flores, who played Coleen Cooper, left the series during season 3. The producers had offered all the leading actors contracts for five years. Although her fee was doubled, Flores refused to commit to five years, so the producers replaced her with Jessica Bowman. This played for the first time in the episode The End of the World .
Background information
The success of the series (four Emmys , 15 nominations) can also be explained by the partly true events from American history. In doing so, the authors succeeded in combining the fictional and the historically documented.
It's hard to avoid the impression that the series actually takes place in the Wild West . It was in the immediate vicinity of the location Los Angeles . The wooded area surrounding the Santa Monica Mountains formed the Cheyenne Indian Reservation, and the city of Colorado Springs came into being on Paramount Ranch .
While filming season 4, lead actress Jane Seymour was actually pregnant. The baby bump seen in season 4 is real; she carried twins. They were born in November 1995.
In the USA in 1996 was under the ISBN 1-57297-036-7 the novel Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman released. The author Teresa Warfield describes the birth of Michaela Quinn in 1833 as well as her childhood and youth as a fiction. The content of the book was written in collaboration with Beth Sullivan. This novel was not written until the television series' Dr. Quinn - Medicine Woman 'had aired in the US for several years.
Since 2004, all 6 seasons have been available in English on DVD (in NTSC format / Region Code 1). Between 2005 and 2010 the six seasons were also released in the German-language dubbed version on DVD by the publisher Koch Media .
Fiction vs. historical processing
The residents of the small town of Colorado Springs are fictional characters. Nevertheless, historical people and facts were processed in the series. So the Cheyenne tribe occurs regularly. Black Kettle , their chief, is shown in the series as well as George Armstrong Custer in great detail. The role of Byron Sully should, at least in part, be modeled on the person of George Bent , a white fur trader who lived with both the Cheyenne and the whites. Like Byron Sully in the series, Bent acted as an intermediary between the Army and the Cheyenne. The massacre on Sand Creek and the massacre on the Washita River are also discussed several times in the series.
Series name
In the original English version, the series is called Dr. Quinn - Medicine Woman . Dr. Quinn saves Black Kettle's life shortly after they arrive. He then gave her her Cheyenne name: Medicine Woman . The sign on the door to Dr. From then on, Quinn's clinic adorns this lettering, which can also be seen in the opening credits. In the German version, the series title was changed to Doctor out of Passion , which does not reflect the aforementioned event.
Movies
In 1999, directed by James Keach , to whom Jane Seymour had been married since 1993, the television film Dr. Quinn - a passionate doctor: the film that ended the series. 2001 director Jerome R. London made Dr. Quinn - Medicine Woman: The Heart Within . However, the television film was not a success in the USA and was therefore never broadcast in Germany.
