The Drachenberg rises in the Elm-Lappwald Nature Park . Its summit is 4.8 km southwest of Königslutter am Elm (Helmstedt district) and 5.5 km northeast of Evessen (Wolfenbüttel district). Settlements that are distributed around the elevation at some distance are Königslutter in the northeast, Sunstedt in the east-northeast, Lelm in the east, Räbke in the southeast, Sambleben in the southeast, Kneitlingen in the south, Ampleben in the southwest, Evessen in the southwest, Erkerode in the west-southwest, Hemkenrode in the west-north-west, Destedt and Abbenrode in the north-west and Bornum am Elm in the north-north-west. The summit region belongs to the forest area of ​​the municipality of Evessen, the transmitter Drachenberg belongs to the municipality-free area of ​​Königslutter in the district of Helmstedt.

In the valley to the northeast of the elevation lies the Lutter spring , from which the Lutter flows, and the honeycomb rises on the southwest slope ; the water from both streams feeds the Schunter .

Natural allocation

The Drachenberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Northern Harz Foreland (No. 51), in the main unit East Brunswick Hügelland (512) and in the subunit Asse-Elm-Hügelland (512.1) to the natural area Elm (512.15).

Protected areas

Parts of the landscape protection area (LSG) Elm (CDDA no. 320601; designated 1984; 53.747 km²) are on the areas of the Drachenberg, which belong to the district of Helmstedt, and parts of the areas that belong to the district of Wolfenbüttel, those of the LSG Elm ( CDDA No. 320600; 1995; 59.28  km² ). Parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Nordwestlicher Elm (FFH no. 3730-303; 14.6 km²) are located in large parts of the survey in both districts .

Transmitter Drachenberg

About 400 m east of the Drachenberg summit is in the community-free area of ​​Königslutter at about 305  m above sea level. NHN the transmitter Drachenberg . Its main broadcast mast is a 181 m high, guyed tubular steel mast. It is used to broadcast radio programs on VHF and DAB. There are two other directional radio towers that were built using a steel framework.

Traffic and walking

The state road  290 (Königslutter – Sambleben) runs east past the Drachenberg , from which the L 629, which passes the elevation southwest of the summit, branches off to Erkerode. An asphalt road leads up that is used by the operators of the Drachenberg transmitter. Immediately outside the transmitter in the direction of the summit region there is a small refuge. Several hiking trails lead past the summit region: to the west, south and east of the Braunschweiger Jacobsweg and the Erkerode-Heinrichsruh destination hiking trail , to the west and south of the Elm Rundwanderweg 27 , east of the Elmkreisel and the radio tower circular route .
