action

After the five-year-old Johnny McGowan lost his parents in a traffic accident, he is said to be living with his grandfather in Scotland. When he arrives at the old castle, he discovers a magical wish tree with which he conjures up a friend, the little dragon "Yowler". Now they grow up together and experience quite a few adventures.

Fifteen years later, the grandfather has since died, discover the documentary filmmaker Bob Armstrong, his daughter Beth and his pilot Brownie McGee Yowler, who has grown into a stately kite. Eager for fame and money, Armstrong Johnny persuades Yowler to "rent" Yowler to the corrupt local businessman Lester McIntyre. Johnny, forced in part by the high taxes he has to pay on the castle, to raise money, allows Lester to take Yowler in. Johnny does this because of his growing interest in Beth.

Yowler is very unhappy about this, because he is now supposed to serve as an attraction for the people in the new amusement park "Dragonworld". But he knows how to defend himself and unexpectedly begins to breathe fire. The visitors flee the amusement park in panic and the security personnel shoot the kite. When it becomes clear that McIntyre has deceived Johnny into exploiting the dragon, Johnny and his new friends take action. First they confront McIntyre, but the entrepreneur is not ready to return the kite. Bob Armstrong knocked out McIntyre and tied him to his chair. After the security guards are also outwitted, Yowler can be freed from the amusement park. McIntyre is furious when he sees the kite fly away and tries to pull it back at gunpoint. For his protection, Johnny sends the dragon away, which is now disappearing again in a cloud of fog from which it emerged fifteen years ago.

Johnny Yowler tries in vain to wish himself back. He keeps going back to the place where they first met and Beth, who stayed with Johnny, can't really comfort him either. He has to realize that for him the time of fairy tales is finally over and he has grown up. Beth gives him a son over the course of the year and he now shows him the family property, as his grandfather once did. Yowler suddenly returns unexpectedly and now Johnny is lucky.
