location

The church is located in the city center at a height of 423 meters above  sea level . The postal address is Kirchgasse 2.

Building history

The church was built from 1738 to 1740 according to plans by the Ansbach court architect Johann David Steingruber from the Ansbach court building department under Leopoldo Retti . The Gothic choir of a previous church from the 15th century was integrated. The church is a hall building in the baroque margrave style with a polygonal Gothic choir closure and northern flank tower as well as an attached sacristy . The core of the tower is medieval. The church has been renovated again and again, most recently in 2001-2004.

A previous church was consecrated under Bishop Gundekar II (1057-1075). She later bore the name of St. Sigismund and St. George . In the 13th century St. Wilhelm named as the first church patron. The town church at that time seems to have survived a major town fire in 1388. The Reformation was introduced from 1528 .

On August 24, 1634, when the city was conquered in the Thirty Years' War by the Bavarian troops under General Johann von Werth, the city and the church were almost completely burned down. It was not until 1650 that reconstruction began under a master builder, Hans Schön.

Furnishing

Late Gothic winged altar
Predella with the meeting of Jesus with Mary Magdalene

The most important work of art in the church is a late Gothic winged altar (around 1500). It comes from the nearby Marienkapelle in Kapellgasse. When the cemetery was moved in front of the city in 1570, the altar was moved to the St. Johannis cemetery chapel, which was newly built in 1588 . There it survived the destruction of the city in 1634. It has been in the choir of the city church since 1935.

The adoration of Jesus by the three kings can be seen in the opened middle section . The side wings show scenes from the Christmas story . In the predella of the altar the encounter between Jesus and Mary Magdalene is depicted. When closed, scenes from the Christmas story can also be seen on six panels.

The pulpit dates from the time the church was built. The organ was built in 1965 by the Steinmeyer company in Oettingen.
