history

As one of the easiest crossings, the Duklapass offered itself not only as an old trade route, but also as a preferred gateway for eastern armies moving west.

In 1849, for example, a Russian army under Paskevich crossed the pass to take part in the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution .

During the First World War , the 1914/15 pass was a hard-fought part of a static front line between Austria-Hungary and Russia. During the Second World War it was captured by the Red Army in September / October 1944 in the course of the Eastern Carpathian operation and thus served as a gateway for the advance on Budapest and Vienna.

At the height of the Duklapass and on the Slovak side you can still find old war material, traces of fortifications, a memorial for the fallen and a lookout tower.

Trivia

After the Duklapass or the victorious battle of 1944, all army sports clubs of the ČSSR were named, including Dukla Prague .
