Dumas is a small town ( city ) in Desha County in the state of Arkansas in the United States . At the last census in 2010 , Dumas had 4,706 inhabitants.

location

Dumas is located in the southeast of the state of Arkansas in the Arkansas Delta region , around 40 kilometers west of the border with the state of Mississippi . The nearest major town, Pine Bluff , is 62 kilometers from Dumas. Immediately north of Dumas is the village of Mitchellville , other neighboring towns are Back Gate in the east and Pickens in the south.

In Dumas is the junction of US Highways 65 and 165 . Arkansas Highway 54 also runs through the city. The Billy Free Memorial Airport is located in the city area . The Boeuf River flows east of the city .

history

The area in which the city of Dumas is located today was originally farmland. In 1870, the French merchant William B. Dumas bought the farmland from the Abercrombie Holmes family and settled there. After the Missouri Pacific Railroad was extended to Dumas, the settlement gradually began to grow. The establishment of a school system began as early as the 1890s. Due to racial segregation , a school for African American school children was opened in 1898. In 1904 Dumas was incorporated and given the name of the city founder. First Mayor and Postmaster of Dumas was Gus Waterman.

Economically, Dumas was mainly influenced by the cultivation of cotton . Due to the economy in the city, the population of Dumas continued to grow and sawmills and wood processing plants sprang up. Due to its location on the railroad and on the Arkansas – Louisiana Highway, Dumas made it an important trading center. Furthermore, there was agriculture in Dumas and there were several shops, a bank and a furniture factory in the city. Due to the city's location between the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers , Dumas was flooded several times. When the Mississippi floods in 1926, the entire city was flooded, the following year Dumas was barely spared from a flood.

Damage after the 2007 tornado

On February 24, 2007, Dumas was hit by a tornado measuring three on the Fujita scale . The tornado destroyed 25 homes and several commercial buildings and damaged others, injuring a total of 40 people. After the storm, US Senator Mark Pryor spoke negatively to the Federal Emergency Management Agency .

2010 Census

At the 2010 United States Census, Dumas had 4706 residents, divided into 1893 households and 1307 families. 32.2% of the population were White , 63.2% African American , 0.5% Asian, and 0.1% Native American; 3.3% of the population were of other races and 0.7% had two or more races. Hispanics and Latinos of all races made up 5.4% of the total population.

There were married couples in 37.9% of households, 26.6% of households were made up of single women and 4.6% of single men. 36.0% of households had children under the age of 18 living with them and 26.5% of households had seniors over 65 years of age.

The median age in Dumas in 2010 was 35.2 years. 28.4% of the residents were younger than 18 years, 9.0% were between 18 and 24, 22.9% between 25 and 44, 25.6% between 45 and 64 and 14.1% of the residents were 65 years or older older. 46.0% of the population were male and 54.0% female.

Census 2000

In the 2000 United States Census , Dumas had 5238 residents in 1977 households and 1399 families. 26.62% of the population were white, 70.02% African American, 0.50% Asian, 0.08% Native American, and 2.78% other or multiple races. At the time of the census, the median income in Dumas was $ 25,754 per household and $ 32,255 per family. The average per capita income was $ 12,727. 28.8% of the population of Dumas lived below the poverty line , including 39.9% of the underage population and 23.4% of the population over 65 years of age.
