Duplicate is an Indian mix-up comedy with action elements from 1998 . It serves as a vehicle for Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan , who appears in a dual role. The film, a remake of the gangster posse Stadt talk by John Ford from 1936 , is characterized by a consistent 1980s aesthetic and a silly, childish tone, which is reinforced by the voice actors in the German version.

action

The clumsy, dreamy Bablu ( Shah Rukh Khan ) takes on a new job - as a chef in a hotel, although he comes from a family of wrestlers. His boss is Sonia Kapoor ( Juhi Chawla ), who finds her new chef extremely attractive, as does Bablu. The budding romance is disturbed by several people - Bablu's pushy mother, the hotel manager, who himself is speculated about Sonja, by the police and above all by his doppelganger.

The police consider Bablu to be the robber and murderer Manu (also Shah Rukh Khan ), whom he is exactly like and whom they are chasing: The gangster Manu has broken out of prison and is now on a campaign of revenge against his former accomplices. They have cheated on him of the booty of a robbery and want to kill him - not least the help of his lover Lily ( Sonali Bendre ) prevents him from being killed by the killers of his former crony.

When the gangster Manu gets wind of his doppelganger, he decides to assume his identity - Bablu does not have a special ID that he received from the police to protect against that. But the mix-up works in both directions: Bablu can not only escape his guards, but also collect his share of the booty from the last of Manu's former accomplices. The gangster Manu is not happy about this and threatens Bablu's mother - but Bablu can outsmart him. In the end, it is Manu's lover Lily who shoots the killer - and the way is clear for a happy ending with a wedding between Bablu and Sonia.

This and that

  • Karan Johar , son of producer Yash Johar, soon became one of the most successful Bollywood directors ever - with the films Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and above all the classic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham ("In good as in bad days").
  • In a comparatively childish singing scene between Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, SRK simulates sexual intercourse for a few moments - unusually clear by Indian standards.
  • Bollywood actress Kajol made a guest appearance in a scene at the train station .
