Earthquake ( English for earthquake ) is a song by British R&B and hip-hop singer Labrinth that he recorded with rapper Tinie Tempah at Syndrome Studios in Los Angeles. The music comes from Labrinth, Tempah wrote the lyrics. The song is included on the Electronic Earth album. Earthquake was first available on October 23, 2011 on iTunes and hit the charts in Australia , Belgium and the United Kingdom , among others . The single achieved platinum status in New Zealand , Norway and Australia .

backgrounds

Even before the single was officially released, Labrinth presented the official lyric video on YouTube and the remixes of the song on SoundCloud on September 16, 2011 . Earthquake - Extended Explicit was also uploaded to Labrinth's SoundCloud channel, where the track was viewed almost 40,000 times by August 2012. For the New Year celebrations on January 1, 2012 at the London Eye , the song was played during the fireworks.

text

According to Labrinth, the main aim of the text is to be as loud as possible in order to be heard, which is expressed by the words "causing an earthquake". Labrinth explained this in an interview with MTV UK : “From my point of view, the song is about triggering an earthquake and how people look in my direction because I make such a noise. Sometimes the one who screams the loudest is the one who is best heard. So an earthquake means screaming as loud as you can. ” He told The Sun tabloid : “ This is my version of Pass Out . I wanted it to sound like a giant robot or Godzilla walking around town. ” The chorus begins with“ I Predict An Earthquake Up In Here! ”And ends with“ We Can Make An Earthquake Up In Here ”(“ We can trigger an earthquake here ”). The text includes allusions to Lady Gaga ("OK, Gaga, I Just Phone Up Their Designer") and Syco ("Hey Simon [Cowell] , We're Fucking Them Up, Turning In Syco"). The songwriters were Labrinth and Tinie Tempah themselves.

composition

The song is mainly characterized by the half-step , which makes the relatively fast tempo of 150 BPM appear much slower. Overall, the song uses rather poor harmonics : Harmony changes take place - if at all - only indicated by the synthesizer lines, only in the intro a clear change between C minor and E flat major can be heard. The sound material remains in the immediate vicinity of the original key of C minor, tension does not build up.

Most of the time of the piece there is solo rap singing , only in the intermediate part there is a polyphonic , completely unaccompanied arrangement of the refrain, which is reminiscent of a church , liturgical chant. Otherwise the genre-typical heckling of the singers are only interspersed in the course of the song a few times. The accompaniment of the track essentially consists of the percussion arrangement and the synthesizer (melody) lines; acoustic instruments are not used.

Music video

The official music video was first released on Labrinth's Vevo channel on October 11, 2011 , after the lyric video was released on September 16. The video, which was shot by Aleks Kolic in Syndrome Studios in Los Angeles, begins with shots of the interior of a Mini whose driver - Labrinth himself - is currently setting the song Earthquake on the car's layout. After Labrinth has left the car and is now standing next to him in the middle of a large, empty hall, the Mini begins to transform into a structure made of loudspeaker boxes. As Labrinth steps aside, the boxes separate from each other and float in the air, where they join together to form the letters of the word Labrinth . Labrinth takes a step forward and the boxes burst, many new ones appear and disappear depending on Labrinth's movements. Then he stands in front of a huge wall, he jumps against it - the wall disappears, more speakers come out. You then see six labrinths standing around a round object that shows frequencies. The labrinths each transform into a sphere. These balls fly to the object in the middle, whereupon a large ball emerges from which you can see Tinie Tempah rise. From this point on he can be seen in front of the sphere or a wall. At the end you see Labrinth walking next to a building.

Metro compared the video in the so-called "Fight Club" with another music video. It was found that the video had no plot, but the images would convince.

criticism

The song received mostly positive reviews. Robert Copsey of Digital Spy noted with praise that Labrinth could meet all expectations after a 12-month hiatus from his own solo career to support Yasmin , Loick Essien and Ms. Dynamite : “And any fears that he'd forgotten how to be the main attraction are quickly dispelled on 'Earthquake' ”( German : And any fears that he might have forgotten to be the main attraction are quickly dispelled by Earthquake . ) Copsey awarded four out of five possible stars. An author from arjanwrites.com also gave a positive review and wrote: "'Earthquake' is a wildly unique powerhouse tune that shows off Labrinth's uncanny ability to write a hit track that is both forward and also very now." ( German : "Earthquake" is an overwhelmingly unique powerhouse that boasts Labrinth's amazing ability to write both a forward-looking and a contemporary hit. )

Live performances

Earthquake has been sung by Labrinth on a number of occasions, including the Jonathan Ross Show on March 24, 2012 with orchestral accompaniment and the support of a choir at the intro. Before the final chorus, he replaced the absent tempah with a solo on the electric guitar, which he played himself. The performance was received positively. Labrinth had already participated in the BBC Radio 1Xtra Live Tour in 2010 . When it was reissued from November 28 to December 1, 2011, it was shown in front of the audience in Manchester . Here, too, he played the piece without Tinie Tempah and instead with an electric guitar. The performance was received positively. Another interpretation that was well received by the media was heard at the 2011 BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge . Tinie Tempah was there, as well as a six-piece choir and orchestra.

Other versions

Busta Rhymes version

Busta Rhymes

On February 8, 2012, a version recorded with Busta Rhymes (instead of Tinie Tempah) was published in the form of a lyric video on Labrinth's official Vevo channel on YouTube. The song was finally released for purchase on February 21, 2012. This version also got a positive response: Scott Shetler from Pop Crush, for example, rated the song with four stars. He said that "I hope Labrinth's self-promotion will bring him something because it deserves attention." A writer from yesgoodmusic.com predicted that Earthquake with the rapper from New York would soon be heard on many American radios.

All Stars Remix

On March 6, 2012, the official "All Stars Remix" for the song was released. The song features raps by Kano , Wretch 32 , Busta Rhymes and Tinie Tempah , while each part is preceded by a “come in”. Tempah sings the first verse, Kano the second, Wretch 32 the third and Busta Rhymes the last verse. The track is only included on the deluxe version of his album Electronic Earth , where it is 4:50 minutes long. In addition, the track was published on Soundcloud.
