Eberhard Leibnitz

Eberhard Leibnitz (born January 31, 1910 in Hanover-Hainholz , † January 24, 1986 in Berlin ) was a German chemist . From 1955 to 1958 he was rector of the Technical University of Chemistry in Leuna-Merseburg .

Life

After graduating from high school in Berlin-Friedrichshagen, Eberhard Leibnitz studied chemistry from 1928 to 1932 at what was then the Technical University of Berlin . In 1933 he became a Dr.-Ing. With a thesis “On the question of the origin of coal” at this university . did his doctorate and then worked there as an engineer. 1935–1937 he was Leo Ubbelohde's private assistant . In 1937 he was dismissed without notice because of a Jewish grandfather. From 1938 to 1945 he worked as a chemist in the paint factory Hermann Frenkel in Leipzig-Mölkau .

After the end of the Second World War , he worked in an office of the Soviet military administration in Germany until 1947 . 1947–1948 he was a trustee of the Leipzig paint factory Springer & Möller AG . From July 1, 1948, he was the technical director of VVB Lacke und Farben and VVB PLASTA, which were based in Leipzig and existed until they were dissolved in April 1952 .

From 1951 he was acting director and later professor with a chair at the Institute for Chemical Technology at the University of Leipzig . In 1953 he became head of the Institute for Organic-Chemical Industry of the Chemistry Administration of the State Secretariat for Chemistry. He was a member of the Scientific Council for the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy at the GDR Council of Ministers.

In 1955 he was appointed professor for organic chemical technology and rector of the Technical University of Chemistry in Leuna-Merseburg as the successor to the founding rector Herbert Dallmann . He held this office until 1958, when Heinz Schmellenmeier was his successor .

In 1956 he also became director of the Leipzig Institute for Process Engineering of Organic Chemistry, which from 1958 belonged to the German Academy of Sciences (DAW).

1961–1964 he was director of the Institute for Documentation of the DAW in Berlin. He then became director of the scientific editing of the central papers of the research institutions of the DAW as well as deputy of the chairman of the research association of the scientific, technical and medical institutes of the DAW for the department chemistry. In 1970 he took over the management of the chemistry research department and was a member of the Academy's executive committee. In 1975 he retired.

From 1971 to 1986 Eberhard Leibnitz was honorary president of the Society for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge URANIA. He was head of the National Committee of the Pugwash Movement in the GDR from 1972 to 1986.

honors and awards

Since 1953 he was a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In 1959 he received the National Prize of the GDR, 2nd class. In 1956 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver and 1974 in gold. He received the Order of Labor in 1962 and 1970, as well as the honorary titles of Outstanding Scientist of the People in 1980 and Hero of Labor in 1985.

In 1960 Eberhard Leibnitz received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University "Carl Schorlemmer" Leuna-Merseburg .
