Eduard Bufé

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eduard Bufé (born June 28, 1898 in Münster , † August 1, 1982 in Rüthen ) was a German draftsman, painter, art teacher and architect. He was best known for his drawings on local history and the historicizing design of traditional inns.

Life

Tomb of the Bufé family in the Rüthen cemetery. The wrought iron cross was designed by Eduard Bufé himself.

Born as a scion of an old Huguenot family in Münster, he attended the arts and crafts school there at the end of his school years at the Oberrealschule (today: Johann-Conrad-Schlaun-Gymnasium ) . The war veteran was only able to take his Abitur in 1919. This was followed by art studies at the Academy in Kassel , which he graduated with honors in 1923.

A scholarship abroad for Italy introduced him to the works of the Renaissance and shaped his artistic worldview. After successfully completing his training as a drawing teacher at secondary schools, he worked as a teacher at the Oberrealschule in Münster. Since permanent school employment was not available during the period of unemployment, he made a name for himself with the diverse artistic works, especially in the field of architecture. His great role model was Johann Conrad Schlaun , the important baroque master builder from Münster. The inside of a room was fundamentally more important to him than the outside. The spatial and visual design of historical restaurants with adequate interiors, for which he designed everything himself, including the wrought-iron lantern, has been his domain since the 1930s. In Münster, Dortmund , Soest and Bonn in particular , he carried out major renovations on behalf of a large brewery. In 1935 he received a high Belgian award for designing the stand of the Dortmund Union Brewery at the Brussels World Exhibition .

After his parents' house was destroyed in the bombing of Münster and he was resettled in the Sauerland, he found a job as an art teacher at the Petrinum grammar school in Brilon in 1943 . He settled in Ruethen, where he had met his wife. From this time onwards, the cities of his adopted home - Bufé had also been an art teacher at the Rüthener Gymnasium since 1966 - were increasingly included in his sphere of activity: Brilon and Rüthen, but also Belecke , Lippstadt and Warstein offered him attractive projects for his architectural and pictorial ambitions. He became better known to the public through his drawings on local history. The historical genre in the manner of the old masters was henceforth his unmistakable trademark. Due to the rapidly growing popularity of the population, Bufé's graphics and calendar sheets became collector's items. Awards and honors (including the Federal Cross of Merit 1976 and honorary citizenship in Rüthen 1981) were only external signs of general appreciation.
