Eduard Sekler (architect)

Eduard Franz Sekler (born September 30, 1920 in Vienna ; † May 1, 2017 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) was an Austrian architect , architectural historian and professor at Harvard University .

Life

Eduard Sekler attended the Schottengymnasium , where he graduated in 1938 . After military service in 1939/40, he studied architecture from 1941 to 1945 at the Technical University of Vienna , where, after completing his studies, he worked until 1954 as an assistant in the chair for building history and building survey I with Karl Holey and at the institute for architecture with Professor Engelhardt . In 1946/47 he attended a special course in reconstruction and urban planning at the School of Planning and Regional Research in London with a British Council scholarship, and in 1947/48 he studied building history at the Warburg Institute under Rudolf Wittkower in London. He completed his studies in 1948 as a PhD in art history with a dissertation on the development of the staircase in British architecture.

From 1945 he had his own architecture office, from 1954 he was visiting professor at Harvard University , where he was full professor from 1960. From 1962 to 1965 he taught at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, which he was director from 1966 to 1976. From 1951 was UNESCO consultant for the preservation of monuments, among other things he dedicated himself to the preservation of the cultural heritage in the Kathmandu valley . From 1990 to 1996 he was chairman of the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust and then honorary chairman. He built several residential complexes for the municipality of Vienna , after the Second World War he was involved in the restoration of the church on Leopoldsberg, which had been damaged by aerial bombs, and of Burg Wartenstein .
