Life

Eduard Stöhling was a son of the Düsseldorf dyer and decorative painter Johann Burchard Ströhling and his wife Marie Gertrude, née Bliessem. He studied at the drawing school in Düsseldorf from Lambert Krahe , a predecessor of the Düsseldorf Art Academy . He then worked in Mannheim and perhaps Paris in 1789, came to Frankfurt am Main in 1790 and went to Mainz in 1791 . In all of these places he created “ intimate pictures of children and families, shaped by the zeitgeist of sensitivity ”. Since the late 1780s, he also painted miniature portraits on ivory .

In 1792 he was in Berlin, where he portrayed Luise von Prussia (1770–1836) . Ströhling became a sought-after portrait painter among the European aristocracy. In 1792 he traveled to Naples to portray Ferdinand IV , his family and members of the royal court. Maybe he also worked in Rome .

This was followed by a longer stay at the imperial court in Vienna from 1794 to 1797. During this time he began to add allegorical and mythological elements to his portraits. In 1797 he traveled to Saint Petersburg. He managed to take part in the coronation of Tsar Paul I in 1799 and to become his court painter . After Paul's murder in 1801, Ströhling moved to Berlin and in 1803 to London. Here he stayed until 1826, received numerous lucrative commissions and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts . From 1810 to 1820 he had the title of Historical Painter to the Prince of Wales , later George IV. When this king became, however, it came to a split with Stroehling.

In 1826 Ströhling had to declare bankruptcy . He went to Ireland . In 1828 he was last recorded here, with portraits of Sir Richard Levinge, 6th Baronet (1785–1848) and his wife in Knockdrin Castle near Mullingar .
