history
The abolition of the manorial rule of the Counts of Stürgkh took place in 1848. The local parishes of Unter- and Oberrakitsch and Hainsdorf-Brunnsee emerged in 1850 as autonomous bodies. After the end of the First World War, there were disputes with the Ljubljana “National Government for Slovenia and Istria” about the area's territory. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark, from 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.
In 1968, Eichfeld (formerly Unterrakitsch), Oberrakitsch and Hainsdorf-Brunnsee were merged to form the large municipality of Eichfeld.
Brunnsee Castle , built towards the end of the 15th century by the Lords of Pettau, was rebuilt towards the end of the 16th century according to plans by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Montiano; it was acquired in 1834 by Maria Karolina of Naples and Sicily (1798–1870) and is now owned by her great-grandson, Count Ferrante Lucchesi Palli .
